Prepping 101 | Basic contents for your BOB

We all have to start some place and the first place to start putting together your BOB (Bug Out Bag) is to have a proper backpack. If you don't yet have a backpack, or are wondering what on earth is a BOB please see my previous article, Bug out Bag (BOB). Pictured above are the basic contents of my BOB. Some items are not included, such as the water pouches and MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) as those are being stored in a cool, dry, dark place nearby and ready to toss in there. Even after putting everything in my backpack, including the water pouches and food, I will have room for 3 changes of clothes. Speaking of water pouches, I have purchased a case of 62 water pouches from (where else?) Amazo

Confessions of a prepper on vacation

I just returned from a mini vacation. My grandson recently graduated from Air Force basic training and my son and his wife were throwing him a send off celebration as a chance for family members and friends to spend time with him before he heads to his first assignment in Alaska. So, my daughter, her teenage son, and I packed up and headed down to Arkansas to visit with my oldest son and his family. My daughter's husband was unable to go with us because of his work schedule, so he stayed home to "man the fort". We were away from home for a total of 4 days. Two of those days were spent on the road driving there and back. As I was packing and getting ready for the trip, I pondered on whether o

Prepping 101 | Bug out Bag (BOB)

In addition to having a supply of long term storage foods in their homes, most preppers also have a Bug out Bag (BOB) for each member of their family. It's best to prepare ahead of time for any and all scenarios you can think of to protect your family. Thus, the need to keep up your long term food storage, and also do as much as possible to be prepared for anything and everything that could happen in today's world. That would including having a BOB for each family member. What is a BOB? A BOB is typically a backpack filled with enough provisions and survival gear to last for at least a 72 hour period. Some of the items inside the BOB should include water, food, cooking and eating utensils, a

It could get real

This is one of the reasons I want to be prepared. Our nation is too vulnerable. My mother always said, "It is better to be prepared than to be sorry". I came across this article today and felt it was too important not to share. 4 Likely Causes Of A Grid-Down Scenario – A Prepper Nightmare By Ben Brown on June 9, 2018

Prepping 101 | Water storage and purification

The human body is comprised mostly of water. That's kind of hard to imagine when we look at ourselves and others, isn't it? Yet, our adult bodies are made up of approximately 60% water; and babies' bodies are closer to 75% water. Knowing that, is there any wonder that we need to consume a lot of water daily? In fact, when it comes to prepping we are advised to store one gallon of water for each person per day! Can you imagine the amount of space it would take to store one gallon of water for 30 days for one person? Just think about hard core preppers who are preparing enough food and water to last years? What if you have a family of 6, you would need an entire warehouse just to store your wa

Prepping 101 | Food Storage: long term

When someone says, "long term food storage" what do you think of? I used to think of canning, simply because years ago I had a huge garden and did a lot of canning. Now, I think of the closet in the basement of our house that has shelves of a different variety of foods that are preserved in many different ways. There are so many options out there for preppers regarding long term storage! Where does one even begin? Well, the first place to start is to educate yourself. You want to get the best bang for your buck and one way to do that is to research what is available. Some important things to keep in mind are: what is the most economical; what you will need to use to prepare it, i.e. water, c

Trusting The Lord and prepping

My mother always taught me it is better to be prepared than to be sorry. Some Christians say that being a prepper is wrong because it is not trusting in The Lord. They say that The Lord will provide if there is an emergency or a national catastrophe. I've even questioned it myself, as to whether or not it was okay to be a Christian and a prepper; even to the point that I felt guilty for being a prepper. I was ashamed to admit to anyone, including family members, that I was a prepper. And yet, I couldn't help but feeling that I needed to be prepared for what is yet to come. Then one day it dawned on me! I was like, "wait a minute...do those same Christians who believe prepping is wrong have i

Prepping 101 | Food Storage: the basics

In my last blog entry I spoke about the need for a basic emergency supply kit. Today, I would like to expound on the contents of the kit just a bit. The kit calls for at least a 3 day supply of non-perishable food items. I'm sure you all know what is meant by non-perishable, but just in case, the photo on the left is an example of non-perishable food items; food that doesn't need to be kept in the refrigerator or freezer. One thing to keep in mind when you're making sure you have enough non-perishable food items on hand is that you may not have access to water. It's a good idea to store food that you won't need to use water to make it. Also, you may not have access to your stove/oven. In tha

Why I started this blog

I started "prepping" about two years ago now, in the summer of 2016. At first, I was overwhelmed with the amount of things we needed to do just to get started! And, I got to thinking just a few days ago that there are probably other people out there like me that didn't really have a clue where to get started. There is a plethora of information out there on the internet about prepping. Millions of tons of articles and websites! I'm pretty sure I spent a kajillion hours or more scoping them out and never even began to scratch the surface. So, why did I start this blog and how do I think I can help others when there is so much information available? Well, I can lead you to some of the sites I f

Prepping 101 | Let the prepping begin!

So, you've heard about prepping and you've been thinking about it. But, you don't quite know where to start. Or perhaps you have heard about prepping, but you haven't really given it a second thought, as to whether or not you should do something about it. What exactly is prepping? According to the google dictionary, prepping is: prep·ping noun the action or process of preparing something, or preparing for something. "after hours of prepping and cooking and stressing and a few near-breakdowns, Thanksgiving was wonderful" NORTH AMERICAN the practice of making active preparations for a possible catastrophic disaster or emergency, typically by stockpiling food, ammunition, and other supplies. "p

Why do people prep?

What is the purpose of "prepping"? Well, for most people it means having enough food and supplies on hand in case of an emergency, either short term or long term. For most "preppers" it means for the long term. It seems today more and more people are becoming preppers; which is a good thing. But why are they doing it? Mostly because the world is in turmoil. In fact, it is in the worst turmoil in modern history. Does that mean that preppers are acting out of fear? If so, what is it that they are so fearful of? For the most part, they are preparing for a collapse in our overall economy and society. The fear that our economy will collapse which will in turn cause a collapse of our overall socie

As in the Days of Noah

We, as Christians, know that we are living in “the end times”. Some of us have felt the need to prepare for such a time by becoming what is referred to in today's world as “preppers” (Note: not all preppers are of the Christian faith). Some would say preppers are following a conspiracy theory, and they are considered fear mongers by many. If that's the case, then in today's world Noah would be considered one of the biggest fear mongers of all. Hebrews 11:7 says Noah was moved by fear and built the ark; out of fear of the end times that God spoke to him about. Noah may have been moved by fear, but it was his faith the propelled him forward to act on that fear. Heb 11:7 King James Version (KJV

Rapture or Resurrection?

I have been a Christian for over 40 years of my adult life and as long as I have been a Christian I have been taught that the Bible says there will be a Great Tribulation. There is no disputing that fact. However, I have also been taught (and have taught) that there will be a rapture of God's people (either before the tribulation or during the middle of it) wherein God will save His children from the evil that is to take place. That we will simply disappear from this earth and be taken up into Heaven to be with Him, to reign a thousand years, and then be with Him forever in the New Jerusalem. Are the rapture and the Second Coming two separate happenings? Is it possible there is no pre/mid tr
