Letting a recipe stew and simmer on the back burner for a while

So, I've been working on a meal-in-a-bag recipe this past week or so. And while it's a great recipe and I've pretty much perfected it, I'm just not sure it's something I want to add to my food preps. Oh, don't get me wrong, the recipe tastes great! It is so close to the very same flavor of my homemade version with "real" food, lol. After having eaten it for three nights in a row, I'm actually craving more of it! However, the texture just isn't what I want it to be. Not only that, but, it really doesn't have the "sticks to your ribs" quality that's going to be needed as much as possible in foods during an emergency situation. I'm not going to give up on it all together, but I am going to have

Should you listen to your heart or your mind?

When it comes to making decisions, do you oftentimes listen to your heart or your mind? Which do you deem as being the wisest choice? There seems to be a lot of differing opinions on this matter. Here's my take on it. I was reading a scripture verse today that I've probably read a hundred times. In fact, it's a verse that I memorized early on in my Christian walk. It's a verse that most Christians are familiar with. But when I read it today, something just “jumped” out at me! It's an age old question...do I listen to my head (mind) or to my heart? Many times when counseling or advising someone, and even in my writings, I will advise people to listen to their “gut”, or their heart. Often time

How to properly store beans and rice: And how I store mine

Have you been storing your beans and rice properly? I've been an avid prepper for over four years now. Yet, I've only recently started storing beans and rice. Ironic, eh? You may be wondering why that is. Well, first of all, I have been concentrating on stocking foods that my family will actually eat. Secondly, beans and rice take a long time to cook (especially beans). Both have to be soaked, then rinsed (using precious water). Beans have to be cooked for at least a couple of hours, which will take extra fuel or wood. And, I just wasn't sure I wanted to go that route. So, over the course of a few years I've done a little research and some thinking. and I finally came up with an idea that wi

National Preparedness Month: Be Prepared Not Scared

Some things we can do this month to be prepared September is National Preparedness Month here in the U.S. I really like the Ready.gov (FEMA) logo for 2019! Because it's true...the more prepared we are for an emergency or disaster, the less scared we will be when something happens! On their website, Ready.gov (FEMA) provides a schedule of things we can do to prepare during each week of the month of September. In this blog article I will cover those four suggestions as well as add a few of my own. (Note: If you are a prepper, I'm sure you are already aware of all that this article will entail. However, I would ask that you go ahead and read it because it may be something that you can share wit
