Planting lettuce, spinach, and kale indoors | seedling updates

Our 2021 spring garden!

Our growing station is growing!

What an awesome feeling one can get from planting seeds and watching them grow into living, breathing, things! And, what a sadness one can get when those living, breathing, seedlings struggle to survive. Today, I will be talking to you about my experience with both of those emotions over this past week.

Lettuce, spinach, and kale

Once again, I'm a bit behind on sharing our gardening escapades with you. And, for that I do apologize. On March 14 my daughter and I planted nine pots of Butter King Lettuce, three pots of Red Rogue D'Hiver Lettuce, three pots of Amaranth Chinese Multi-Color Spinach, and three pots of Russian Red or Ragged Jack Kale.

Lettuce, spinach, and kale seeds planted in 3.5 inch pots.

I have planted lettuce before, but directly in-ground. I've never planted spinach or kale. So, I'm really excited to see how these all turn out! I figure they will make a nice salad mix once they are all ready for harvest 😊.

The way we planted this tray of seedlings was different than most of the others we have done. Instead of poking a hole in the soil and planting 3-4 seeds in the hole, we scattered the seeds across the top of the pre-wet soil in the pots. Then, gently pressed the seeds into the soil. And then, we took some of the dry soil mix and sprinkled it on top of the seeds; a very thin layer. Then, used a spray bottle and misted the dry soil covering the seeds. The next watering was done a couple of days later by the bottom watering technique.

I might as well give you an update on the lettuce, spinach and kale while we're on the subject. And, since it's been a few days since the seeds were actually planted. I was quite surprised when I saw the seeds sprouting on the third day after planting! Especially since the Butter King Lettuce seeds said they would germinate in 7-10 days, and the Russian Red Kale seeds said they would germinate in 6-9 days! The Amaranth Chinese Multicolor Spinach seeds said they would germinate in 3-4 days, and they hadn't poked through the ground yet.

Looking at the pictures above, you would think the lettuce and kale seedlings had been growing for a couple of days already. But, they popped up like that overnight! I had just checked them the evening before and there was nothing poking through the soil. Not in any of the pots in this tray. Like, I said, I was quite surprised.

Other Seedling Updates

Onion and strawberry seedlings

Onion seedlings March 17, 2021

I have to be honest with you. The onion seedlings aren't doing very well. In fact, I checked with a local Facebook gardening group and was told that I had planted the seeds too late. I planted them on March 4, and apparently they should have been started in January. So, even if they do start to grow stronger, they won't be much more than green onions this time around (according to the person in that group). But, I'll take that! I like green onions. And, next year, for sure, I will start them in January! With the proper distance from the grow lights (See Planting tomato, cherry tomato, and pepper seedlings, seedling update, and awesome news where I talk about the grow lights and the problems I had with the onions.) I will not let this first attempt at starting onion seedlings indoors stop me from trying again!

Strawberry seeds March 17, 2021. No sprouts as of yet.

As for the strawberries. They still look the same. Nothing poking up through the soil as of yet. But that's okay, because they can take anywhere from 14 to 48 days to germinate. I sure hope they don't take the full 48 days!

Tomato, cherry tomato, and bell pepper seedlings

Tomato seedling on March 17, 2021.

If you look really close in the pic above, around the middle of the pot, you will see the tomato seeds starting to germinate. These are the Bonny Best Tomato and they usually take 7-14 days to germinate. This is day six. So, pretty good.

In the pic above, again, looking very closely, near the center of the pot, you will see a seedling just barely poking through. It almost looks like the white speckles all around, but it's a little bit thicker and a little bit longer than those. This is the Chadwick Cherry Tomato. They also are supposed to germinate in 7-10 days and this is on day six.

Ummm...I guess I wasn't quite excited enough about the bell peppers not germinating yet on day six because somehow I forgot to take a picture of them! But, there really wasn't any need for a picture if they aren't sprouting or growing yet, right? Besides, they can take 7-10 days to germinate.

So, now we have onion, strawberry, tomato, cherry tomato, bell pepper, lettuce, spinach, and kale seeds planted. And, so far, all are doing well except for maybe the onions. Next up will be herbs. Lots of different herbs.

Have you planted any garden seeds indoors yet? If so, what have you planted? If not, do you have any plans to do so? Let's talk plants in the comment section below.

Speaking of talking! We have a new/old forum on this very site now!! If you want to chat and interact with fellow preppers and fellow Christians, head on over to the CPG forum. It's a place where we can talk without Facebook keeping track of what we talk about 😊. It is a private forum and you will need to be a member of this site to participate.

That's all I have for you today. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Until next time...happy prepping, and God bless!

EDITOR'S NOTE: On 3-20-2021 I edited the lettuce, spinach, and kale update section as I used the wrong photo. My apologies. Just goes to show that none of us are perfect, lol.
