Should Christians be prepping?

Won't the Rapture happen first?

Not for the faint of heart

I've heard many Christians say things such as, "I don't need to be a prepper because the Lord will provide" or, "Christians don't need to prep because we won't be here, the Rapture will happen before anything gets that bad". When they say these things, they are usually speaking about what preppers refer to as SHTF (Stuff Hits The Fan). But, as Christians, we know that they are referring to The Great Tribulation spoken of in the Bible.

When I hear people say these things, I can't help but thinking, "have you even read the Bible?". So many of us trust our pastors and teachers enough to just take their word for it. I mean, after all, they are men/women of God, right? Yes, they are (at least most of them) but they are also human. Many of us believe something because that's the way we've always heard it or been taught. We don't take the time to research and study it for ourselves, we just trust and believe that that is the way it is. Well, pastors and teachers can be the same way. After all, what has been said about the Rapture has seemingly been backed by scripture; mostly taken out of context and used to make a point that is their/our own thinking. I know because I have done the same thing.

For years I had been doubting in my mind the teaching of a pre or mid Tribulation Rapture. But I fought it, based upon what I had been taught by pastors and teachers. I had felt the need to study the Books of Revelation, and Daniel for myself for years.. But, I fought it. I mean, who wouldn't want to be taken up in the Rapture before the world crumbles and falls apart? Who would want to live in a post-apocalyptic world when we can escape it by being Raptured? And then, about a year ago I finally gave in to that nagging thought that I needed to study it for myself and make a decision on what I believed about it based upon what the Bible actually says. You can read my findings in my article, Rapture or Resurrection?.

2 Timothy 2:15, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (KJV)

Having said that, let me say this. Even if I'm wrong and there is a pre or mid Tribulation Rapture, do you think there will be things leading up to it? Would it happen in a time of peace? Or would it happen in times of turmoil? Regardless of what you believe about the Rapture, there's a pretty good chance that we are going to see some very hard times in the coming year or years leading up to the actual day when Jesus returns in the clouds to receive His own. It will not be a time of sunshine, lolly pops, and rainbows. This world has to get so bad that He NEEDS to take His children out of it. That He needs to put an end to all of the hate, lies, destruction and unbelief. That He needs to prove who He is.

Luke 21:34, And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. (KJV)

Just like we need to be prepared spiritually, we also need to be prepared physically. How can we be strong and aware enough to be on the alert if we are dying of starvation? How can we be ready? By being prepared both spiritually and physically for the destruction that will proceed His return. If we want to be truly ready for His return, we should take the necessary steps to do so, shouldn't we? We don't know what will happen, but if we look around and see what has been happening for the past few decades that have led to Christians declaring that we are in the End Times we will know that we are very close to that happening. Just like He prepared Noah for the coming destruction upon the earth, He is preparing His people today. See my article, As in the days of Noah.

1 Thessalonians 5:2-6, For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. (KJV)

Notice in the above scripture the parts that say, "sudden destruction cometh upon them" and, "But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief." and, "Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.". This tells me that something will happen that will cause the world to go into chaos. And, that we will be here to see it.

Sudden destruction

All will seem well in the world when all of a sudden something happens bringing destruction. But, we, as Christians, should be aware of all that is going on and should be prepared for what is to happen. It doesn't say to be prepared to leave this world, but to be aware and prepared for that which will happen suddenly that will overtake those who are not prepared. Sounds to me like a SHTF scenario happening. If something is going to happen to bring destruction, I want to be ready to face it. What about you?

Darkness

Darkness cannot not blind us because we are the children of the Light. That must mean the darkness are the children of the world. Who rules the earth? Who is it that tries their best to blind the children of the Light with his darkness? Do you see where I'm going here? The darkness wants to overcome the light. To cause the light not to be able to see what is happening. But, the darkness cannot overcome the light. Therefore, I admonish you to pray and ask the Lord that your eyes be opened to what is happening in this world today, and what you should do about it.

Watch

It also says that we should be vigilant, to not be found sleeping (being oblivious to what is going on in the world around us). We need to watch and be sober. How can we be alert if we are not aware of the things that are happening around us? If we are to "watch and be sober" then that means that we need to be aware. How can we be aware if we are not watching? We can't! We can't be aware while ignoring what is going on in this world. So, we need to push away the darkness and open our eyes (and our minds) to what is going on. Our own government keeps us blind to all that is going on "behind the scenes". They want us to think everything is honky dory and peaceful. But it really isn't is it?

There are so many things that could happen at any time now to cause sudden chaos and destruction. All it would take is a snap of a finger, a computer key being tapped, a switch being pulled, a phone call being made or a text being sent that could send this world into almost instant chaos and destruction. There has never been a time in history where this could possibly happen so quickly and so globally as there is now. Since we don't know when the Lord will actually return, are you ready for something catastrophic to happen? Would it really be being a good steward if you weren't? If we are to be good stewards then we need to plan and be ready for whatever may happen.

Our ancestors were preppers. Before we had all of the modern conveniences that we have today, they used to lay up food for the coming winters. For hundreds, if not thousands, of years people did this. Why does it suddenly seem such a wrong thing to do? That's really all preppers are doing. Preparing for tough times (winter). Which leads me to the next scripture...

Matthew 6:19-21, Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (KJV)

Some will use the above scripture to say that we shouldn't store up food. In fact, it's one of the biggest arguments against Christians prepping that I have heard and seen. Well, last I knew food was not a treasure, but a necessity. If food were a treasure, then according to this scripture we shouldn't eat at all. Or, at the least we should procure our food each day, not buying enough to last a week as most of us do. What would you do if there was no longer food available at the stores to buy? That is something that could realistically happen in our lifetime. Look at the recent happenings in Venezuela.

Conclusion

So, do I believe Christians should be preppers? Yes I do! God has been warning His children for the past few years to be ready for what this world will be throwing at us. I have chosen to respond to that warning, and it is my prayer that if you haven't already done so, that you too will make that decision respond; and act upon it. If you need help getting started, my Prepping 101 series is a good place to start. It's just the very basic info, but you can go from there and expand your knowledge. I would recommend starting with Why do people prep?. Prepping is not what a lot of people are led to believe. It isn't about becoming Rambo.

If you are a Christian and you've already made the decision to begin prepping, please share this article with those who have not. We need to spread the word that it's okay to be a prepper. In fact, if we are truly responsible Christians, it is expected of us.

As usual, please feel free to comment below if you have any questions regarding this article, or if you just want to talk about it. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Until next time...happy prepping, and God bless!
